Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. As a young infant, Ford struggled with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by word associations. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford applied instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time she was already making her debut on television in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. But Tate soon began to garner recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her show in 1996.
